Caring for your ring is easy, but it depends on what it is made of. Hardness is measured on the Mohs scale, where a diamond is 10.
Zirconium Ceramic (about 8.5) and Tungsten (about 9)
- Very close to unscratchable in everyday wear. Almost nothing you meet day to day is hard enough to mark them, and they hold their polish for life.
- The trade-off is brittleness. They resist scratching, but a hard strike or a drop onto tile or concrete can chip or crack them. Treat them as tough, not indestructible.
- They cannot be resized or refinished, which is why getting the size right the first time matters.
Titanium (about 6) and Stainless Steel (about 5.5)
- Extremely tough and effectively unbreakable, but softer than ceramic or tungsten, so they will pick up fine scratches and a worn patina over time.
- That patina is normal. These can be repolished, so scuffs are not permanent.
- Best kept away from rough surfaces and heavy impact during work, lifting, or sport.
Every ring
- The band is bare material, so everything above applies to it. The inlay channel is different: it is sealed under a solid clear finish coat.
- That coat is what protects the inlay, whether it is opal, fossil or wood. Look after the finish and the inlay looks after itself, because nothing reaches the inlay unless the coat is damaged first.
- Clean with a soft cloth and mild soapy water. Dry it fully.
- Keep solvents away from it. Acetone, nail polish remover and similar chemicals attack the finish, and that is the layer standing between the world and your inlay.
- Skip abrasive cleaners, polishing compounds and ultrasonic cleaners. They dull or cut through the coat rather than cleaning it.
- Take it off before swimming or showering, to keep it away from chlorine and to stop it slipping off.
- Store it in a safe, dry place away from other jewelry so nothing harder can knock against it.
If your ring needs attention, reach out at support@formandforgedesigns.com. Titanium and stainless steel can usually be repolished. Ceramic and tungsten cannot be refinished, but we will always talk through the options with you.
